Whey protein concentrates are created by pushing the protein source (milk, whey, etc.) through a very small filter that allows water, minerals and other organic materials to pass though.
Meanwhile, the proteins, which are too big to pass through the filter, are collected, resulting in protein powder.
Milk Protein Concentrates (MPCs) and Milk Protein Isolates (MPIs) are manufactured by membrane filtration through which dairy proteins are isolated from fresh skim milk.
Among proteins they hold a relativey high biological value and are rich in calcium, have good heat stability and a excellent flavour profile.
Calcium Caseinate is derived from fresh skim milk. It is comprised of 92% protein and is found in your common weight gainers for that thick taste. Casein is very very slow to digest, thus it leaves a constant flow of aminos through your blood stream long after you take it in.
Fructose is a monosaccharide (simple sugar), which the body can use for energy. Because it does not cause blood sugar rise tremendously (has a low glycemic index), it was once thought that fructose was a good substitute for sucrose (table sugar). However, the American Diabetes Association and nutritional experts have changed their minds about this. When too much fructose enters the liver, the liver can’t process it all fast enough for the body to use as sugar. Instead, it starts making fats from the fructose and sending them off into the bloodstream as triglycerides (you can actually gain weight).
Sunflower oil is the non-volatile oil compressed from sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seeds. Sunflower oil is commonly used in food as a frying oil, and in cosmetic formulations as an emollient.
Soluble fiber attracts water and turns to gel during digestion. This slows digestion. Soluble fiber is found in oat bran, barley, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, peas, and some fruits and vegetables. It is also found in psyllium, a common fiber supplement. Some types of soluble fiber may help lower cholesterol, but the effect on heart disease is not known.
The definition of natural flavor under the Code of Federal Regulations is: “the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional.”
Soy lecithin is not soy protein, but instead a component of the soybean plant that is used an emulsifier in a variety of foods.
Olive oil powder is made by combining olive oil and tapioca maltodextrin. Tapioca maltodextrin is a slightly sweet modified starch that will thicken and stabilize liquids high in fat. Since it can absorb more than its weight in liquid, it can transform fat into a powdery substance that melts on the tongue.
Flaxseed oil contains both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are needed for health. Flaxseed oil contains the essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which the body converts into eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil.
Guar Gum a natural food thickener, similar to tapioca flour.
It has significantly more thickening ability than cornstarch, at a fraction of the cost.
Xanthan gum is a sugar-like compound made by mixing aged, or fermented, sugars with a certain kind of bacteria.
In manufacturing, xanthan gum is used as a thickening and stabilizing agent in foods.
Lemons are thought to have strong antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-boosting powers and are sometimes used for weight loss aid because lemon juice is a digestive aid and liver cleanser.
Magnesium is an element your body needs to function normally.
Magnesium oxide may be used for different reasons. Some people use it as an antacid to relieve heartburn, sour stomach, or acid indigestion.
Magnesium oxide also may be used as a laxative for short-term, rapid emptying of the bowel (before surgery, for example).
It should not be used repeatedly. Magnesium oxide also is used as a dietary supplement when the amount of magnesium in the diet is not enough.
Tricalcium phosphate is a calcium salt of phosphoric acid. It is also known as bone ash. Tricalcium phosphate is frequently used in the food industry as an additive in powdered spices, and acts as an anti-caking agent. It is sometimes used as a rising agent.
Unlike most artificial sweeteners honey does your body good. For starters, the antioxidant-rich elixir protects your heart, and despite packing more calories than sugar (21 per teaspoon versus 16), it’s unlikely to expand your waistline: A recent study found that overweight or obese patients who received a 2.5-ounce dose of honey every day for a month lowered both their total and LDL cholesterol, while they maintained or even lost weight. And preliminary research says honey may improve memory and reduce anxiety.
Magnesium citrate, called below by the common but ambiguous name magnesium citrate, is a magnesium preparation in salt form with citric acid. It is a chemical agent used medicinally as a saline laxative and to completely empty the bowel prior to a major surgery or colonoscopy.
A flowering plant with reported health benefits such as boosted energy levels and decreased anxiety.
Potassium citrate is a potassium salt of citric acid with the molecular formula C6H5K3O7. It is a white, slightly hygroscopic crystalline powder. It is odorless with a saline taste. It contains 38.3% potassium by mass.
As a food additive, potassium citrate is used to regulate acidity. Medicinally, it may be used to control kidney stones derived from either uric acid or cystine.
Copper is an essential trace element found in all body tissues. This mineral is a nutritional partner of iron in helping to metabolize food into hemoglobin. It performs critical functions in numerous enzymes, such as its catalytic role in the antioxidant superoxide dismutase.
The root of the yucca plant may be anti-inflammatory and help lower cholesterol.
Ascorbic acid is another word for Vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is a naturally occurring organic compound with antioxidant properties. Ascorbic acid works to preserve food.
Psyllium powder is ground psyllium husk. Because it is finely ground, it disperses more easily in liquid than the husks and is easier to drink. It is high in fiber and nutrients.
Silicon dioxide is found in many multivitamin and mineral supplements because silicon is necessary for good health.
As a necessary nutrient for the health of your skin, hair, nails and bones, dietary silicon may also help to prevent arthritis and osteoporosis.
It also works as an anti-caking agent, and is added as an ingredient in foods to help keep your processed foods appetizing.
Biotin is a water soluble vitamin and another name for vitamin H.
Biotin is associated with many health benefits including the metabolism of fats and amino acids, as well as the production of new cells.
Lactase is an enzyme produced in the digestive enzyme of infants and some, mostly European, adult humans. Lactase is essential to the complete digestion of whole milk. Lactase breaks down lactose, a simple sugar which gives milk its sweetness. Lacking lactase, a person consuming dairy products may experience the symptoms of lactose intolerance. Lactase can be purchased as a food supplement, and is added to milk to produce “lactose-free” milk products.
Vitamin E is a powerful, fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect cell membranes against damage caused by free radicals and prevents the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. The term vitamin E encompasses a group of eight compounds, called tocopherols and tocotrienols, that comprise the vitamin complex as it is found in nature.
Vitamin A palmitate is the form of vitamin A found naturally in animal sources and also produced synthetically.
Zinc oxide is added to many foods as a source of zinc.
Manganese is a vital nutritional element, especially for the activation of enzymes. This essential micromineral is necessary throughout the body, from protein metabolism to brain function. High levels of manganese are found in the pancreas, pituitary glands and kidneys.
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in very few foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. The main function of vitamin D is to regulate the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in our bones and aid in cell to cell communication throughout the body.
Chromium is an essential mineral that your body needs in trace amounts.
It plays a role in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism by helping insulin to function properly.
Niacinamide and niacin are slightly varying forms of vitamin B3.
Vitamin B3 is naturally in many foods like fish and green vegetables and is also found in many vitamin B complex supplements.
Amino acid chelated minerals may help make vitamins more effective. Helps enhance the immune system and acts as a powerful antioxidant.
Molybdenum is an essential trace element that is necessary for a variety of reactions in the body.
Vitamin B6 is a vitamin that is naturally present in many foods. The body needs vitamin B6 for more than 100 enzyme reactions involved in metabolism. Vitamin B6 is also involved in brain development during pregnancy and infancy as well as immune function.
Bromelain is a mixture of enzymes that digest protein (proteolytic) that are found in pineapples (Ananas comosus). Pineapple has been used for centuries in Central and South America to treat indigestion and reduce inflammation.

an enzyme that converts cellulose into glucose or a disaccharide
Neutral protease is a type of enzyme sometimes used in food processing.
Papain is an enzyme naturally found in unripe papayas and it helps break tough protein fibers, making it great for digestive support.
Is a protein enzyme EC 3.2.1.1 that hydrolyses alpha bonds of large, alpha-linked polysaccharides, such as starch and glycogen, yielding glucose and maltose. It is the major form of amylase found in humans and other mammals. The first step in the production of high fructose corn syrup is the treatment of cornstarch with α-amylase, producing shorter chains of sugars.
Have been shown to possess valuable therapeutic action as anti-inflammatory agent and break up protein into amino acids.
Cyanocobalamin is a man-made form of vitamin B12 used to prevent and treat low blood levels of this vitamin. Most people get enough vitamin B12 from their diet. Vitamin B12 is important to maintain the health of your metabolism, blood cells, and nerves. Serious vitamin B12 deficiency may result in a low number of red blood cells (anemia, stomach problems, and permanent nerve damage.
Riboflavin also known as vitamin B12. This is naturally found in many foods and it is added to many protein shakes.
Thiamine hydrochloride is a white, crystalline hygroscopic food-additive used to add a brothy/meaty flavor to gravies or soups.
It is a natural intermediary resulting from a thiamine-HCl reaction, which precedes hydrolysis and phosphorylation, before it is finally employed (in the form of TPP) in a number of enzymatic amino, fatty acid, and carbohydrate reactions.
Folic acid is a B vitamin. It helps the body make healthy new cells.
“Folic acid” and “folate” mean the same thing.
Folate is found naturally in some foods and folic acid is a manmade form of folate.
Since 1998, folic acid has been added to most enriched bread flours, cornmeal, pasta, rice, and other grain products in the U.S. and Canada.
This was done to help prevent spina bifida and anencephaly, two birth defects that are caused in part by too little folate in a mother’s body around the time her baby is conceived.
Isagenix Isalean is a product that is being pushed by a multi-level marketing company, and as a rule of thumb, are usually more expensive. The high price doesn’t always necessarily mean a better product, but there are some that actually quite good. Our editors found that at first glance, this is definitely one worth noting.
The protein blend found here (vanilla) is not based on soy, instead relying on a hormone free whey concentrate that comes from New Zealand. The filtered protein isolation is done with organic materials, and doesn’t have a great deal of negative factors. This option definitely started good, but once you look behind the curtain, there are some things that could make one think twice.
Fructose – Very high on the ingredient list (right after the proteins) is Fructose.
With a good protein blend, and a derived source that is organic and not based on soy, Isageanix Isalean is definitely a good overall option, however, with the sugar and sodium involved and 240 calories, and fructose being so high on the ingredient list, it is not one of the best meal replacement solutions available today.
I’ve been a long time fan but with the new stuff not sure! They’ve done something to the mix and it does not taste good at all. It also is more prone to clumping; even in an actual blender. If you’re looking for a very good nutritional shake, try a few different ones and then decide which one is best for you based on taste, texture, and health benefits.
I have only had a couple shakes so far. The taste is really good. I have added milk or half of a banana. Just need to account for the extra calories if watching weight. I bought it for after my pregnancy. I’ll start on a regular basis after baby is here & review results. But my review is just based on taste, it’s really yummy.
As a meal replacement shake, it tastes great and keeps hunger pangs at bay for some time. The only problem I see is the expense and Fructose in the ingredients.
I love Isagenix products, they are excellent, I literally have twice every day. I’ve tried Herbalife until I found out it was SOY based and switched to this..very happy.
I had tried this last year, and lasted 2 weeks. This year I decided to try it again, heard there was a new formulation. Well, yes, it tastes great. No metallic taste. Have been on it 2 months, lost 9 pounds and kept it off!!No yoyo diet here. GNC and the others taste like lead, and you cannot understand half of the ingredients. I am doing well and so is my family. Once I get to my goal, I will be doing the maintenance plan. Very please with product! Make sure you read your label folks; it’s everything!
My friend is doing this program and I asked her to let me try it since I wan’t to start, I have tried Herbalife, Slim Fast, Atkins and I must tell you that I don’t like vanilla, however, leaving my dislike for vanilla, this shake tastes like a chocolate shake period, no after state no chemical taste nothing, all she did was use one scoop, one splenda, ice and water and it was done with a blender cup, I don’t own this product and much less work with them but if you like vanilla you will def like this healthy shake, I will be trying choc because my sister recommened.
